2014: Year of the Shark

I have recently come to a decision on my Space Marine army, after giving it a lot of thought. When I started doing my Art Scale Marines, I had every intention of doing the Ultramarines 2nd Company. I was close to completing my first squad when I decided to improve them, to match my vision of what Space Marines should look like. It was at this time that I began to doubt what Chapter I should do, as I was torn between Carcharodons, Crimson Fists and Ultramarines. I decided to do a test mini of each Chapter, and see which one I liked the most.

I went with the Carcharodons first, as I had been reading about them on the internet. The resulting test mini can be seen below. I enjoyed this mini so much that I decided the Carcharodons were the Chapter for me.

After this decision, the next step was to find some inspiration. The Badab War series I received during the holidays helped with the lore side. Of course, I am very visual, so I needed some artwork to get myself going. A quick Google search yielded some pretty cool results.

Carcharodon vs Tau Space Shark Chaplain Space Shark Terminator
The first image is from the Deathwatch supplement Honour The Chapter. It’s another book on my list, as it has a fair amount of lore on the Carcharodons. It also looks deeper into how the individual might act and behave, something I really like about the Deathwatch books. I love the brutal feel of the first image, and it’s something I want to keep as I continue with the Carcharodons. The next two images are by Aerion the Faithful. These are both older works, and I am not sure where I found them. Something I quite like about them is the inclusion of red as a spot color. It’s a nice way to add more than different shades of grey to the models, and it’s something I’ll be adding to my Carcharodons. It’s also a nice wink to the old Space Shark scheme.

I already have 2 Tactical Squads almost finished, and I have been working on this project a lot recently. As soon as I can finish an Assault Squad, Chaplain, and get a Stormraven, I will have something close to 1000 points. But of course, this is a Space Marine army, so there are many more units I want to include. Art Scale Terminators are on the list, of course, along with Captain Tyberos.

This project will probably take me a good portion of the year to complete,as there is a lot of work involved with Art Scale marines. I hope to get at least one update every month on these guys, and get started painting soon!

Cheers,

They are a very cool Chapter! I love how brutal they are, and how Forge Worlds Chapter Tactics reflect that.

Wow, that’s almost exactly what I did for my choice of chapter. Either Ultramarines 2nd Co. with some Sternguard, or Crimson Fists inspired by the artwork where they have a lighter blue-grey steel look, and then I ended up playing Carcharodons. Regular scale though.

There definitely needs to be more Carcharodon stuff out there. For instance, I’ve already seen and read all the images and text you’re referring to. But I’d say we’re pretty blessed as we are in terms of models, fluff, images, etc for being such an obscure niche chapter. I’m beginning to think I may have tapped out the entire Internet for Carcharodon info. And perhaps even RT Space Shark stuff as well.

I am really hoping for a novel from Black Library. I’ve seen the short story, but I haven’t gotten around to reading it yet. Maybe Forge World will have them in another book, like the Minotaurs. We can hope!
